The renowned publisher has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Shift Comes After Poor Feedback
The new appointee takes on the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's disappointing early showing last autumn.
Recently, 2K president a key figure informed team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that playtesting had indicated the necessity for a clearer direction.
The president noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to better meet player expectations.
Trend of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement mirrors a similar step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the full message from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just completed your meeting - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a message, I expressed the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and talented designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that partnership to endure.”
With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It affirmed the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It highlighted the requirement for a clearer brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to consideration and overhauled the title with a refreshed goal - one that’s positioned to deliver on its ambition to our fans.
The belief in this project grows every day. To boost the remarkable advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of the team. After several months of discussions, he comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
Ben’s guidance and background in the competitive gaming genre is considerable, having spent the past decade and a half developing and managing some of the most popular titles in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and lately, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all looking forward to persist observing the progress of the game in the weeks to come.
The President
Experience of the Incoming Head
Brinkman presently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. He previously worked at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, earlier in his career, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Game Information and Vision
Project Ethos was revealed in last year together with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in real-time to fit your unique tactics," the description states. "Face the rivals with unique powers, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every round. Do you leave securely with your collected items? Alternatively go big, gamble everything, and trust your group can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."
The game has not yet received an confirmed launch window or supported systems, but enthusiasts can anticipate additional details as development advances.
